Certain scenes were cut from the theatrical version of the film and some were added/created for this fan edit in order to reflect the original King novella more closely.

 

Fanedit Details -

Several sequences have been dropped, including Mrs Carmody's foul language (her character did NOT use it in the book) and her 'comedic responses', plus the entire side story of the soldier/check out girl was removed, along with all scenes including the MP in the Pharmacy, and all subsequent mentioning of his character, plus the sequence with the soldier 'explaining the source of the mist'...opening/closing onscreen titles, or 'chapter heads' were added (creating a Novella Flavor')...an entirely new ending based on the book finale has now been added.

 

Intention for this fanedit: To create a version that adheres more closely to the original Stephen King novella, mainly altering the 'suicide/deaths' ending to reflect the original haunting and ambiguous 'Hartford/hope' finale from the book.

Some of the most noteworthy alterations include:

 

Opening Scenes: Added 'The Novella Cut' under film title, Chapter Heading between end of storm and following day scene...added (from DELETED SCENES) Stephanie speaking to Brent Norton before Brent, David and Billy head to town.

Arrival at Market Scenes: Deleted sequence of Mrs. Carmody in bathroom praying (not in book) and her foul language directed at Amanda...deleted entire side story of soldier and check out girl, scenes of the MP speaking to soldiers. At end of earthquake, David carries Billy to back of store, scene now fades out to a Chapter Heading, fades back in to David and group in store aisle.

 

Norm and Tentacles/Flat Earth Society: Immediately following the sequence w/ the loading bay/tentacles, the scene with David emerging from the back room is now extended, started from the beginning (we now see Amanda reading to Billy as the opening shot before David emerges) with extensions in the conversation between David and the locals (more detail RE who Brent Norton is), before the Flat Earth Society heads out, some of Mrs. Carmody's 'cute/humorous' dialogue has been cut.

 

First Night/Bugs: Edited in sequence (from Deleted Scenes) of David speaking to Mrs. Turman about their spouses, when bugs get into store, Sally's death is now edited out (as was her romance w/ the soldier, earlier), David carrying out Billy and asking 'Did we get 'em?' edited out, replaced with more dramatic shot of bikers legs pulled into mist for effect.

 

Soldiers Suicides/Pharmacy Trip: Before David goes to speak with lone soldier, his dialogue is cut right where he states 'I want to know what this mist is'...we then cut to the soldier as David approaches him (losing any references to the MP, who is edited out of upcoming pharamcy scenes, as the MP 'explains' what the mist is, which did not occur in the novella), other soldiers are shown having hung themselves, and scene ends there, rather than having the remaining soldier tossed out into the mist (this also did not happen in the book)...all exposition 'explaining' the origins of the mist have been edited out. Pharmacy sequence edited to remove the MP (who stated 'it's all our fault', etc). When they arrive back at the market, the sequence fades out after Mrs. Carmody asks 'NOW do you believe?'....fades in on a new Chapter Heading.

Final Confrontation/Hope: Mrs. Carmody's death scene was slightly edited to remove the shot of the exit door to the market as everyone leaves (there was a bloody hand print, from the soldier who was tossed outside, visible on the glass), and all sequences after the Impossibly Tall Creature passes by are now edited to remove the suicides/murders and replace them with shots of the truck coming to a halt in front of an abandoned Howard Johnson's motel, as happened in the book. Final onscreen text mirrors the 'Hartford/hope' ending, last shot is a pullback of the entire planet covered in mist...fade out to credits.

NOTE: Other minor edits involve losing dialogue snippets in some scenes, mostly the deletion of Mrs. Carmody's 'humor' or bad language, which tended to detract from otherwise tense sequences.
 

The added sequences were from the DELETED SCENES which can be found on the DVD release of 'The Mist'. These specific portions mirrored sequences from the book (Mr. Norton speaking with Stephanie before he, David & Billy leave for town, conversations in the store and so on).
